Most people enjoy getting gifts. I like to get gifts. Soon after I made a special new friend, I got a special gift. I got a swan that was made from a wheat plant. Before this I had never gotten anything like it. And I have never gotten anything like it since that time.<\/p>\n
In my first post about using \u201cget\u201d in English<\/a>, I began explaining that \u201cget\u201d has many meanings. In another post, I explained that one use of \u201cget\u2019 is as a main verb<\/a> with a lot of meanings. this post continues explaining how to use \u201cget\u201d in English.<\/p>\n One of the meanings of \u201cget\u201d as a main verb is \u201creceive.\u201d My little story has several examples of using \u201cget\u201d in this way.<\/p>\n Many people enjoy getting gifts. = Many people enjoy receiving gifts.<\/p>\n If you make a sentence using the word \u201creceive,\u201d you can replace this word with \u201cget.\u201d<\/p>\n I like to receive gifts. = I like to get gifts.<\/p>\n One special note I must make is that you should not replace \u201creceive\u201d with \u201cget\u201d in formal speaking and writing. Fore example, if you are writing a business email to your boss, you must use \u201creceive.\u201d If you are making a speech at a business meeting, you must use \u201creceive.\u201d But if you are giving a less formal speech like a Ted Talk, you can use \u201cget.\u201d Or if you are talking to your friends, using \u201cget\u2019 is okay.<\/p>\n Now it is time to practice.
